Hibiki Japanese Harmony

Hibiki, meaning 'resonance' or 'echo' in Japanese, is one of the finest expressions of the country's blending tradition. Created by Suntory, Hibiki Japanese Harmony is the entry point into a range that has shaped the international reputation of Japanese whisky.

Hibiki is the work of Suntory, the company founded by Shinjiro Torii, who in 1923 established Japan's first malt whisky distillery at Yamazaki on the outskirts of Osaka. The Hibiki range itself was introduced in 1989 to mark Suntory's ninetieth anniversary and quickly became a symbol of Japanese blending mastery. The philosophy behind Hibiki is one of harmony — the careful balancing of many component whiskies into a single, unified voice.

Hibiki Japanese Harmony is a blend of malt whiskies from Suntory's Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries, combined with grain whisky from the Chita distillery. Component whiskies are matured in a variety of cask types, including American white oak, sherry casks and the prized Mizunara Japanese oak. Rather than emphasising an age statement, Hibiki Japanese Harmony is designed to express balance — the delicate interplay of its many parts.

Japanese whisky drew its earliest inspiration from Scottish traditions but developed a distinct philosophy over the following century, one that emphasises subtlety, balance and craftsmanship. Hibiki represents the height of this tradition and has come to symbolise the artistry of the Japanese blender on the world stage.

The Hibiki bottle is one of the most immediately recognisable in whisky. Its twenty-four faces represent the twenty-four sekki — the traditional micro-seasons of the Japanese calendar. The label is inscribed with calligraphy drawn from washi paper made by hand in Fukui Prefecture.

Hibiki has been repeatedly honoured at international spirits awards and is considered a benchmark for Japanese blended whisky.
