A History of the Distillery
Glenmorangie was established in 1843 at Morangie Farm near Tain in the Northern Highlands, where William Matheson converted an old brewery into a distillery. The name is believed to derive from the Gaelic Gleann Mòr na Sìth, meaning 'the valley of tranquillity'. Over the following century and a half Glenmorangie has become one of the most respected single malt distilleries in Scotland, celebrated in particular for its pioneering work on wood-finished whisky.
The Production Process
Glenmorangie's stills, at 5.14 metres, are the tallest in Scotland — a height often compared to that of an adult giraffe. Only the lightest, most delicate vapours rise high enough to reach the condensers, giving the spirit its characteristic elegance. The 18-year-old undergoes extended maturation in a combination of ex-bourbon American white oak casks and Oloroso sherry casks, producing layers of orange peel, honeyed malt and warm spice.
Historical Significance
Glenmorangie is widely credited with pioneering the concept of cask finishing in the Scotch whisky industry, a technique that has since been embraced by distilleries around the world. Its Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, is recognised as one of the most influential scientists working in whisky today.

Distillery Curiosities
The water used at Glenmorangie is drawn from the Tarlogie Springs, a source unusually rich in minerals. The distillery has purchased hundreds of acres of land around the springs to safeguard their purity and maintains a herd of Highland cattle on the surrounding pasture. Every bottle of the 18-year-old is individually hand-checked at the distillery.
